There is nothing like serving on a board of directors for deepening your understanding of how businesses operate. Since 1996, I have served as a director for several corporations. This experience has enabled me to see how corporation function and has had a profound impact on my understanding of business. Most notably I have learned;
- What processes a business needs in place to be functioning ethically.
- How business decisions are made and who is responsible for making them.
- How the authority to run a corporation is assigned to individuals and committees and the responsibilities of those individuals and committees to perform their role and duties.
- What information executives need and why they need it.
- What, how, why, and when in regards to funding, budgeting and setting fiscal goals.
- How to develop a realistic business plan.
